The pure joy of devotional books

It all started with Oswald Chambers and My Utmost for His Highest. I rescued an old leather-bound copy from a used bookstore (boy, do I miss those!) on Long Island back in the late 1980’s. It opened a world of devotional literature to me, and though the menu has grown exponentially, I continue to be fed sumptuously from this table every day!

So, each morning, coffee in hand in my favorite chair, I open as many as seven devotional books to receive daily edification and spiritual nourishment. Some are short and pithy, and others are lengthy and detailed. I love them all. There is rarely a day when I do not walk away from that chair feeling closer to my King, and more aware of His presence in my life.

Many of the quotes and ideas for In the Hollow have come from these morning moments, not just from my regular woodland hikes. Like a prospector, I scour them for nuggets that I can share with others, in the hope they will find lasting value, as I do.

I will be sharing some of my favorite devotional books with you here in the coming weeks. I bought most of them at used book sales over the years, and some are rare. Most of them are old and out of print, but, when possible, I will help you find them at a reasonable cost.

Stay tuned…
